Lil Abner review
Posted : 16 years, 10 months ago on 3 March 2008 03:47 (A review of Lil Abner)This is one of those movies that I watched as a kid, and got to watch again recently. It attempts some of what looks today like low-level political satire, although it may just be that I'm not picking up on the references. But it's a good fun movie, and I'm still trying to avoid singing "what's good for General Bullmoose is good for the USA..."

Torchwood review
Posted : 16 years, 10 months ago on 19 February 2008 12:26 (A review of Torchwood)I would enjoy this more if the producer didn't keep coming over all fanboyish. Spotting which other shows he's a fan of by watching Torchwood is ridiculously easy. I enjoy this show, but I would like it so much more if he'd put more originality into it.

TRON review
Posted : 16 years, 10 months ago on 15 February 2008 04:10 (A review of TRON)I never get tired of watching this movie. I really enjoyed it when it first came out (as a kid), and I was a little surprised at how much I still enjoy it, now that I'm an adult. But I watch it again every month or two, and I'd recommend it to anybody.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: The Trilogy of Four: A Trilogy in Four Parts review
Posted : 16 years, 10 months ago on 15 February 2008 02:31 (A review of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: The Trilogy of Four: A Trilogy in Four Parts)I love this series! It can get a little confusing some times, but if you keep your sense of reality set to 'free and easy', it helps make sense of it all. I've read it again and again for years now, and I'm still getting something different out of it each time.

Howl's Moving Castle review
Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 31 January 2008 02:40 (A review of Howl's Moving Castle)I read this before I saw the film. As a consequence, I found the film disappointing. I still enjoy the book far more than the film, and would recommend it to anybody without hesitation.

Castle in the Air review
Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 31 January 2008 02:37 (A review of Castle in the Air)I actually read this book before I read Howl's Moving Castle. I certainly enjoyed it, though, and I'd recommend it to younger readers who enjoy fantasy.

Cupcakes review
Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 23 January 2008 02:05 (A review of Crazy About Cupcakes)Just because my cookbooks bookshelf is not full to overflowing is not a good reason to buy more cookbooks. This, on the other hand, has a nice looking collection of recipes, including a whole heap with some of my favourite ingredients. These include, of course, chocolate and alcohol (including champagne cupcakes, and chocolate beer cupcakes. Um, yes. They are actually serious about that latter one...). Droooool.

The Eyre Affair (Thursday Next) review
Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 22 January 2008 02:42 (A review of The Eyre Affair (Thursday Next))I've heard this series described as "postmodernism made entertaining." I have to agree with that, since 'science fiction' and 'fantasy' don't really do justice to it as descriptors.

Meet the Beatles: A Cultural History of the Band That Shook Youth, Gender, and the World review
Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 22 January 2008 12:09 (A review of Meet the Beatles: A Cultural History of the Band That Shook Youth, Gender, and the World)This goes into the cultural history of England in the 60s in a way that helps it make sense of the whole period - something that Beatles authors often seem to take for granted that those of us who were born later already know about and understand, which is not necessarily the case.

The Beatles: The Magical Mystery Tour review
Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 21 January 2008 11:24 (A review of The Beatles: The Magical Mystery Tour)Don't get me wrong - I like this movie. I like it alot. But let's face it. It's best watched when drunk (or possibly stoned.).
